Sustainable to me means utilizing technologies, advances, and methods to ensure that our future families, populations both nationwide and globally have a food source, have work, have a means to provide for their families both nutritionally and economically. To me farmers are the epitome of sustainable. These multigenerational farms are proof that what farmers do, have been doing and will continue to do is sustainable. They utilize the land so that they can pass it down to their children, so that they can make more utilizing less of our precious resources, they are feeding our ever increasing population. No matter what method of production, how great of size and scale, advances and technologies in sustainability should be celebrated and farmers should be part of the celebration. Along with the rest of us out there helping to ensure the futures of our children will be bright. That they will be healthy and that food will be affordable to them.

To me sustainable is a complex word, especially when used in agriculture. To be sustainable one must look at several factors. To name a few at the top of the list: Economics, stewardship, environment, welfare, labor, time and family.

These factors along with others must be considered and managed appropriately to be sustainable on farm operations in order to stay viable for entertains to come.

  5. To me, sustainable means that I must produce more than the generation before me, while improving the land such that the next generation can out do mine. I think that something that many consumers overlook is economic sustainability, I heard someone explain once that: "The least sustainable farm is a subdivision". Great discussion topic!

While always concerned with sustainability and in a holistic sense, it means just that much more to me now that I can look the next generation in the face. He turns 1 next month.
